Svornato
Rhodope Folklore Region
Svornato is a Bulgarian dance from the Rhodope folklore region of Bulgaria and has a time signature of 9/8. The Rhodope folkore region is steeped in tradition and is nestled in the heart of Southern Bulgaria encompassing the Bulgarian cities of Smolyan and Kardjali as well as the maginificent Rhodope mountains. The Southern border of the region neighbours Greece and to the North extends towards Thrace. Typical Rhodope dances are simple, uncomplicated and relatively easy to pick up. The dances tend to be slower and smoother and movements appear more refined and restricted without the jumps and springs so characteristic of other folklore regions. The dancers can sometimes be heard to shout and copper bells often accompany the music as well as tambourines, bagpipes and even the use of a flute can be detected. The costumes often are adourned with colourful ornaments and the colours of yellow, red and green dominate. Women tend to wear what looks like an apron and headscarves whereas the men can wear a jacket, thick red belt, thick socks and black hats.
